Life-Saving Brain Surgery in Lviv

According to TSN.ua: In a remarkable medical achievement, neurosurgeons in Lviv performed a complex brain operation on a premature infant weighing just 750 grams. Born at 25 weeks of pregnancy, the baby girl spent 147 days in intensive care before being discharged home. Her mother, Natalia, endured an agonizing ordeal as her daughter’s condition remained critical—the newborn was unable to breathe or feed on her own.

Surgery and Recovery Journey

The emergency C-section was completed within 10 minutes of the onset of bleeding, a crucial step that saved the infant’s life. At four months old, the girl also underwent laser eye surgery on her retina, highlighting both the severity of her condition and the skill of the medical team. At the time of discharge, she weighed 6.2 kg and showed no signs of seizures.

Dr. Taras Mykytun, who led the surgery, commented:

“This is the smallest child I have ever operated on in my career.” — Taras Mykytun

This case stands as a powerful testament to modern medical capabilities and offers hope to parents facing similar challenges. It underscores the importance of cutting-edge medical technology and highly trained professionals in Ukraine, where such delicate brain surgeries on premature infants demand not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of neonatal development. The baby’s discharge from the hospital serves as a beacon of hope for families navigating similar crises.
