Kyiv Reels from Major Attack: Over a Million Lose Power, Heating Cut to 4,000 Buildings.
Kyiv's Post-Attack Crisis
According to TSN.ua: The Ukrainian capital is grappling with the aftermath of a large-scale Russian military strike on January 20. By the evening of that day, the city's water supply had been restored. However, the situation remains severe, with over one million consumers still without electricity and heating cut off to 4,000 residential buildings. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure, especially during the harsh winter months.
Government and Energy Sector Response
To address the crisis, 49 generators have been deployed to Kyiv from the Energy Ministry's reserve hub. Currently, 68 emergency crews are working at the affected sites to restore critical utilities and provide residents with power and heat.
"Start-up operations will continue throughout the night," stated Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
He added that boiler heating procedures are planned so that heat can begin returning to Kyiv homes by morning. According to Shmyhal, repair teams are working non-stop, and authorities are making every effort to stabilize the situation in the city.
Mitigating the strike's impact is critically important for Kyiv's residents, as restoring heat and electricity directly affects their daily lives and safety during winter. The government and energy services' focused response on re-establishing basic utilities represents a vital step in supporting the population amid the ongoing war.
Continued monitoring of the energy sector's status will be essential for assessing stability and security in the capital.
