Germany's Merz Opposes Sending Taurus Missiles to Ukraine, Citing Kyiv's Own Capabilities.
Germany's Stance on Taurus Missiles for Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: At a Bundestag hearing, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated his opposition to supplying Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, arguing that Kyiv is already producing highly effective long-range weapons of its own. He emphasized that Germany is not solving any problems by providing additional weaponry, declaring:
“Ukraine is better armed today than ever before”. This marks a notable shift from Merz’s pre-election calls to deliver the missiles to Ukraine.
The Chancellor also pointed out that while weaponry for Ukraine already exists, what is needed are financial resources to ramp up its production. He noted that no order has been placed for the development of new Taurus Neo missiles, and that the Bundeswehr's stockpile of Taurus missiles remains extremely limited. This position signals a growing preference for backing Ukraine’s domestic defense industry rather than depleting Germany’s own arsenals.
Germany's Evolving Position
Back in early 2023, German Ambassador to Ukraine Heiko Thoms had already stressed the need to build up Kyiv’s capabilities. Berlin’s stance on the Taurus issue is thus becoming increasingly clear: the focus is on supporting Ukraine’s own manufacturing capacity rather than direct arms deliveries.
Merz’s latest remarks reflect a broader recalibration of German policy regarding military aid to Ukraine. By prioritizing the development of Ukraine’s indigenous production capabilities, Germany may be aiming to foster greater self-reliance for Kyiv in the defense sector. At the same time, this approach could indicate a desire to reduce Germany’s reliance on weapon shipments, shifting emphasis toward financial assistance and technological development instead.
