Can Your Cat's Personality Be Read in Its Paws? The Nekteso Method Examined.
The Resurgence of the Nekteso Method
According to TSN.ua: A trend for analyzing feline personality based on paw shape, known as the Nekteso method, has regained popularity across social media. Despite this growing interest, the approach lacks any scientific validation. The concept originated with a Japanese creator named Akatsuki, and the first edition of a book titled 'Nekoteso' was published in 2013.
Paw Shapes and Their Alleged Meanings
The term Nekteso derives from the Japanese words 'neko' (cat) and 'teso' (palm reading). Proponents claim that examining a cat's paw pads can offer insights into its behavior and temperament. The shapes they identify include:
- Heart: Cats described as affectionate, vocal, and treat-loving.
- Round: Known as the 'rice ball' shape, associated with sociable and active cats.
- Flattened with a notch: Said to indicate a calm cat that is wary of strangers.
- Flattened without a notch: Characterizes cats as aloof and selective in their interactions.
- Triangular: Called the 'launchpad,' linked to a feisty and independent nature.
- Rice Grain: Thought to signify a shy and cautious personality.
- Clover: Suggests an emotional cat deeply attached to its owner.
It is important to note that a study cited by supporters, which supposedly surveyed over 2000 cats, has no scientific backing. In 2016, an American research group published a paper in the 'Journal of Comparative Psychology' examining the influence of 'paw preference' on behavioral traits in cats. However, this research does not validate the Nekteso method, which remains controversial within scientific circles. This method is part of a long tradition of attempting to categorize animal personality, similar to canine temperament tests.
Consequently, despite the method's popularity on social platforms, the scientific community maintains a skeptical view of its accuracy and reliability.
This phenomenon illustrates how social networks can amplify the spread of unverified theories, capturing the public's imagination. When it comes to understanding animal behavior, it is crucial to consider peer-reviewed research and expert opinions to distinguish between entertaining trends and substantiated facts.
