Ukraine’s Education Minister Announces University Overhauls Driven by Corruption Concerns.
The Challenge of Bribery in Higher Education
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, has raised alarms over the prevalence of petty bribery within universities. He warns that schemes where students pay for exam or test results pose a serious threat to the integrity of the educational system. Lisovyi emphasized that this type of 'everyday, small-scale' corruption is particularly damaging to society because it shapes students’ first experiences with dishonesty.
Steps Taken by the Ministry of Education and Science
Journalist Halyna Ostapovets reported that the Ministry is currently assessing conditions at educational institutions. If violations are uncovered, decisions may be made to restructure or merge universities. Lisovyi also pointed out that an unusual increase in the number of students aged 25 and older has been observed since 2022, raising further questions about educational quality.
“If we detect anomalies, such as a surge in students within that age group, my team and I are prepared to take appropriate action.”
Oksen Lisovyi
Lisovyi further stated that he has no plans to resign, vowing to continue working on improving the education system. Additional measures include stricter oversight of school attendance, which forms part of a broader effort to combat corruption in academic institutions.
Corruption in higher education remains a pressing issue in Ukraine, as it can significantly undermine educational quality and public trust in academic institutions. The Ministry’s push to detect and eliminate corrupt practices could represent a major step toward raising educational standards. Amid shifting student demographics and broader national reforms, ensuring transparency and honesty in the learning process has become increasingly critical.
