Moldova’s Response to Dniester River Contamination

According to TSN.ua: Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Russia’s ambassador, Oleg Ozerov, following a Russian attack on Ukraine that polluted the Dniester River. The contamination originated from a strike on the Dniester Hydroelectric Station in Ukraine, triggering a serious environmental crisis in the region. The Dniester is a critical water source for Moldova, supplying roughly 80% of the country’s population and 98% of Chisinau residents.

In response, Moldovan authorities have declared a 15-day environmental alert for the Dniester basin, effective March 16, 2026. The pollution was first detected on March 10, prompting water supply restrictions in some areas even before the broader alert was issued.

Environmental and Political Fallout

Moldova’s foreign ministry has strongly condemned the attack, which caused an oil product spill into the Dniester. The incident has raised alarm not only locally but also internationally, highlighting the urgent need for measures to protect water resources and ecosystems. This event underscores both the environmental and political repercussions of the armed conflict in Ukraine, as contamination of vital waterways poses severe risks to neighboring countries. Moldova’s reaction reflects growing concern among nearby states about ecological safety and the necessity for global cooperation on environmental protection, especially in conflicts that can have cross-border impacts.
