According to ТСН: Dog owners should be particularly cautious during walks during periods of severe cold. Experts warn that frost can significantly affect the health of four-legged friends, and not all pets can withstand the cold.

Weather Conditions and Dogs' Reaction to Cold

During the winter period, temperatures in some regions already drop below zero. Experts note that dogs' reactions to the cold vary significantly depending on breed and age. Some dogs tolerate frost easily, while others suffer even with a slight drop in temperature.

Sensitivity to Cold

Dogs with thin or short fur, slender breeds, puppies, and elderly animals suffer the most from the cold. Even at +5 °C, such pets may feel uncomfortable. Veterinarians recommend shortening walks when the temperature is close to zero, and at -4 °C and below – leaving dogs at home.

Signs of Hypothermia

Prolonged exposure to frost can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and cracks on paw pads and noses. Warning signs include: shivering, whining, reluctance to move, lifting paws, or attempts to find warmth. If these symptoms occur, the animal should be urgently taken indoors and warmed up.

Recommendations for Walks

If the weather permits walks, specialists recommend using warm clothing for dogs, especially for short-haired breeds. Active movement helps keep warm, but walks should be short. The best time to go out in winter is from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM when the air is slightly warmer.

At the slightest suspicion of hypothermia, do not hesitate — veterinary assistance should be provided as soon as possible.

Many owners mistakenly believe that hiding food indicates stress. Animal behavior experts explain that the reason for this phenomenon is much more interesting.

The health of our four-legged friends depends not only on proper care but also on timely responses to weather changes. Attentive owners should be aware of the risks associated with the cold and ensure their pets' comfort and safety during winter walks. In freezing weather, it is important to maintain personal contact with a veterinarian to keep your pets healthy and active throughout the winter.
