Ombudswoman on the language in theaters: why audiences should not hear another language.
According to inkorr.com: Olena Ivanovska, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, expressed that audiences in Ukrainian theaters should not feel the need to perceive performances in other languages. She noted that the law does not oblige Ukrainians to know any other language except Ukrainian, so this language should be a common means of communication for everyone in the theater.
“I feel painful about this. According to the law, a citizen of Ukraine is not obliged to know any other language except the state language. If I come to the theater, I should not be forced to perceive a performance in a foreign language. Ukrainian should be a common communicative denominator for all,” emphasized Ivanovska.
Ivanovska also mentioned that the problem of using the Russian language in theaters has its roots in the colonial past when the Russian language was imposed as the only one. She called for a fight for full language autonomy, which, in her opinion, is only a matter of time.
Russian cartoons as a tool of hybrid warfare
Moreover, Ivanovska warned parents about the inadmissibility of watching the Russian cartoon 'Masha and the Bear', emphasizing that it is not just children's content, but also a tool of hybrid warfare that spreads Russian values and cultural influence.
“Every rocket, every Shahed, every loss today is a vaccination that strengthens our young generation. For them, the Ukrainian language becomes not just a means of communication, but a symbol of struggle and freedom,” emphasized the language ombudswoman.
Ivanovska once again emphasized the importance of the Ukrainian language in theaters and warned about the negative influence of Russian content on the youth. In modern conditions, the Ukrainization of the cultural space and the support of Ukrainian identity become particularly relevant, as language is not only a means of communication but also an important part of national consciousness. The right cultural choice can be an important step towards strengthening the independence and unity of Ukrainian society.
