Criminal Case Opened After Rare Stag 'Runi' Shot Dead Near Kyiv.
Illegal Killing of a Champion Stag
According to TSN.ua: Police in the Kyiv region have launched a criminal investigation into the illegal killing of a unique stag named Runi at the 'Na Rogakh' eco-park. The animal was shot, and authorities have opened a case under Part 1, Article 248 of Ukraine's Criminal Code concerning illegal hunting. Runi's death is a significant blow to the country's efforts in breeding pedigree deer, a program vital for genetic diversity.
Runi was officially recognized as having the largest antlers in Ukraine, measured by the international CIC scoring system. His antlers measured 84 cm and 87 cm in length, with 22 and 24 points respectively. The owner of the farm where Runi was kept described the stag's death as the loss of a unique genetic resource, underscoring the incident's severe impact on national biodiversity conservation.
Tragedy Strikes in Makarivka Village
The village of Makarivka in the Vyshhorod district, home to the eco-park, is at the center of this tragedy due to Runi's crucial role in the breeding program. This incident follows other threats to wildlife in Ukraine, such as when a Shahed drone strike on the Kyiv Zoo earlier injured a miniature Asian deer named Mo, highlighting the compounded dangers animals face from both conflict and human activity. The illegal shooting of Runi now raises further concerns about animal protection in the country.
This case starkly illustrates the urgent need to preserve biodiversity and protect wildlife in Ukraine, where conditions for wild species are deteriorating due to both conflict and unlawful acts. The opening of the criminal proceeding may serve as a catalyst for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws to prevent future tragedies. It is hoped this loss will galvanize public attention toward conservation issues and legislative initiatives aimed at safeguarding Ukraine's rare animal species.
