Mother Charged with Willful Neglect After 7-Year-Old Son Dies from Exhaustion in Western Ukraine.
Tragedy in Western Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: A 7-year-old boy has died from what authorities believe was severe exhaustion in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine. His mother now faces charges under Article 166 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code for willful failure to fulfill parental duties. The child suffered from serious congenital conditions that required constant medical supervision.
Social services had repeatedly documented hazardous living conditions for the child. As a result, the mother had already been stripped of her parental rights. The boy was placed in a rehabilitation center, where he received necessary medical care until November 2025. However, his health took a sharp turn for the worse in December 2025, leading to his death.
Child’s Condition and Investigation
At the time of death, the boy weighed only about 11 kilograms (24 pounds)—a clear sign of critical physical depletion. A court case is now underway against a doctor at the rehabilitation center who may have been involved in providing inadequate care to the severely ill child. The Office of the Prosecutor General is actively investigating to uncover all the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
This heartbreaking case highlights major shortcomings in Ukraine’s social protection and medical care systems for children with severe health conditions. Without proper oversight of the living conditions and treatment of children with special needs, fatal outcomes become a real risk. The case has sparked widespread public outcry, as child welfare and protection remain pressing issues across many parts of the country.
