Ombudswoman on the language situation in Transcarpathia: Ukrainian is losing ground due to challenges.
According to inkorr.com: Olena Ivanovska expressed concern about the language situation in Transcarpathia, noting that the Ukrainian language is gradually losing its positions in this region, falling into the background compared to the languages of neighboring countries. This poses serious challenges for the state language.
“This is just one example of the challenges faced by the state language. Transcarpathia was a special area of responsibility for my predecessor, and I have not reached there yet. Unfortunately, 24 hours a day is not enough for full-fledged work,” emphasized Ivanovska.
The ombudswoman stressed the need to increase the staff and capabilities of the Secretariat to more effectively address the support of the Ukrainian language, as currently only five people are working in this area in the country.
Summary
The new language ombudswoman drew attention to the negative trend of preserving the Ukrainian language in Transcarpathia, where it is gradually losing its positions in favor of other languages. It is important not only to support the state language but also to expand the resources and representation of the ombudsman to address this issue.
