Surge in flu cases in Europe

According to ТСН: Europe is experiencing a sharp increase in flu cases caused by a new dominant strain of the virus. This is placing serious pressure on healthcare systems in many countries.

According to the World Health Organization, 27 out of 38 countries in the European region have reported 'high or very high flu activity'. More than half of patients with flu-like symptoms have tested positive in six countries, including Ireland, Serbia, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom.

The flu season started approximately four weeks earlier than in previous years. People are advised to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus: get vaccinated, stay home if feeling unwell, and wear masks in public places if respiratory symptoms are present.

WHO reported that the new seasonal flu variant – A (H3N2) sub-clade K – accounts for 90% of all confirmed flu cases in the European region. However, there is no evidence that it causes a more severe course of the disease.

Doctors emphasize that vaccination is a key preventive measure.

"This is especially important for those at increased risk, including older adults, people with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and children,"
the statement said.

Healthcare workers are also a priority group as it is vital for them to protect their health and the health of their patients.

WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri Kluge noted that the peak of the flu season is expected at the end of December or the beginning of January.

It is worth remembering that the new wave of the flu, caused by the H3N2 strain, has already spread to dozens of countries. The virus has undergone seven mutations and has affected over 30 countries, raising concerns among medical professionals.

The flu situation in Europe may have serious consequences for healthcare systems as the activity of the virus increases. It is important to be aware of preventive measures and to respond to the epidemic to reduce risks for oneself and others.
