Odessa Zoo in Crisis: Crumbling Infrastructure and Staff Salaries of Just 6200 Hryvnias.
The State of Odessa Zoo
According to Novyny.live: Odessa Zoo is facing severe challenges, including a dilapidated aquarium-terrarium complex and outdated animal enclosures. Director Igor Bilyakov has highlighted that critically low staff wages are a major obstacle to the zoo's normal operation. He specifically noted that
"most employees take home a net salary of 6200 hryvnias", a sum equivalent to roughly $150 USD, which is below the national average wage. The situation is causing significant concern, as the zoo's very future is threatened by ongoing inspections and its precarious state.
Zoo Details and Development Plans
Spanning 6.5 hectares, Odessa Zoo is home to a collection of approximately 1,700 animals representing 233 species. A municipal development plan named 'Zoo 100' was adopted back in 2013 with the goal of improving conditions for both animals and staff. However, the current crisis demands urgent intervention, as the planned improvements have not materialized.
The City Council has decided to establish a working group to assess the zoo's situation. Materials for evaluating the zoo's effectiveness must be compiled by March 6, 2026, with a report containing findings and recommendations due by March 10. These steps are crucial for the zoo's future, especially since a court has already seized the buildings of the Odessa Zoological Park as part of a criminal proceeding. The zoo's survival now hinges on this working group not only assessing the current dire state but also developing a concrete action plan to secure better funding and modernize its infrastructure, which is vital for animal welfare and the institution's overall stability.
