Ukrainian Army Officer Arrested for Running Desertion-for-Profit Ring.
Criminal Group Dismantled in Dnipropetrovsk Region
According to Novyny.live: State Bureau of Investigations (DBR) officers have broken up an organized group in the Dnipropetrovsk region that was helping military personnel illegally flee their units. According to a DBR report issued on February 18, a Ukrainian Armed Forces (ZSU) officer masterminded the desertion scheme, receiving substantial payments for his services. Desertion remains a significant challenge for Ukraine's military as it continues its defense against the ongoing Russian invasion.
In one specific case, the group arranged the escape of a soldier from the Kamianskyi district of Dnipropetrovsk region for $14,000. The serviceman paid a transporter $7,000, and on September 9 of last year, he was taken from his unit and moved to the city of Dnipro. During a search of the detained officer's property, investigators seized nearly $4,000 in bribe money, evidence pointing to the systematic and organized nature of the group's activities.
Severe Penalties Await the Accused
The members of the criminal group, including a major, now face severe legal consequences. For obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces and aiding desertion, they could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison. An indictment has already been sent to court, demonstrating law enforcement's intent to hold the perpetrators accountable. This case highlights the authorities' ongoing efforts to combat corruption and maintain discipline within the military ranks during a time of national crisis.
