Orban’s Controversial Claim: Ukrainians Want the War to Continue.
Outrage Over Viktor Orban’s Remarks
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sparked anger with cynical statements about the war in Ukraine, accusing Ukrainians of wanting the conflict to drag on. He emphasized that without backing from European nations, Ukraine would be unable to sustain its fight. Orban specifically stated:
“Ukrainians want to continue the war”, adding that
“if Europeans weren’t supporting Ukrainians, they wouldn’t be able to keep fighting”. He also noted that “it’s their country, their struggle for freedom.”
Escalating Tensions and Diplomatic Fallout
These comments have provoked widespread indignation in Ukraine, where they are seen as anti-Ukrainian. Meanwhile, a separate controversy involving the Druzhba oil pipeline is ongoing. A Hungarian delegation led by Gábor Csapék traveled to Kyiv for talks, but Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry stated that the Hungarians lack official delegation status.
In his remarks, Orban also claimed that Ukrainians have threatened his family, further straining relations between the two countries. These developments highlight worsening ties between Hungary and Ukraine amid the war and energy-related disputes.
Orban’s statements underscore the fragile state of diplomacy between Hungary and Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. His stance, which has drawn sharp criticism in Ukraine, may reflect broader regional political divisions, particularly concerning energy dependencies and security. These events could shape future negotiations between the nations, especially regarding energy cooperation and European support for Ukraine.
