Pension Payments for 337,000 Ukrainians Halted Over Verification Failure.
Pension Payments for Internally Displaced Persons in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: In early 2026, Ukraine suspended pension payments for a segment of its internally displaced population (IDPs) who failed to verify they were not receiving funds from the Russian Federation's occupying authorities. Social Policy Minister Denys Ulutin clarified that 337,000 individuals were affected, not the 1.3 million initially reported. This verification process is a measure to prevent potential dual payments from both the Ukrainian state and Russian-controlled entities.
The suspension of pension accruals took effect on January 1, 2026. To resume payments, individuals were required to confirm they were not receiving money from Russia. Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets noted a significant surge in citizen complaints regarding the halted payments since the start of the year. It is known that some of these individuals had their pensions reinstated in January 2026, with over 48,000 more scheduled to receive restored payments in February 2026.
Challenges Facing Internally Displaced Persons
Consequently, the suspension of pension payments has caused considerable distress among Ukrainians, particularly those unable to complete the required identification. They face significant hurdles in accessing crucial financial support during an already difficult time.
This situation underscores the challenges faced by internally displaced persons in Ukraine, especially within the context of the ongoing conflict and economic instability. - Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets
The introduction of new conditions for receiving pension payments risks exacerbating social tension among vulnerable population groups already in precarious situations. It is vital for state authorities to ensure the accessibility and transparency of the verification process to prevent further complications for citizens in need of financial aid.
