Protecting Ukraine's Spring Flowers: Fines for Picking Endangered Blossoms.
Safeguarding Early Spring Flowers in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: With the arrival of spring in Ukraine, the blooming period for legally protected early-flowering plants begins. The illegal picking, transporting, or selling of these plants will result in administrative penalties. Starting in 2026, Ukraine will implement new fines specifically for the destruction or sale of these early spring blossoms, highlighting the importance of protecting these natural treasures. These measures are part of a broader European effort to preserve native flora and combat biodiversity loss.
Ukraine is home to over 40 species of protected early spring flowers. Among them are:
- Crocus
- Spring adonis
- Spring snowflake
- Scilla
- Pulsatilla
- Wild garlic (ramsons)
According to Ukraine's Code of Administrative Offenses (КУпАП), fines for illegally picking protected plants can reach up to 1,700 UAH. Specifically, for destroying or illegally gathering flowers from the wild, fines are set at up to 510 UAH for private citizens and up to 850 UAH for officials.
Furthermore, violations related to the acquisition or sale of plants are regulated by Article 88-1 of the Code, while breaches of plant protection rules fall under Article 90. Compensation for a destroyed plant ranges from 49 to 62 UAH for species like snowdrops or spring snowflakes. These steps are aimed at preserving Ukraine's natural heritage and ensuring the protection of rare plant species. The introduction of the new fines in 2026 will provide additional incentives for Ukrainians to comply with nature conservation laws.
The Importance of Biodiversity Protection
The introduction of new fines for destroying early spring flowers is a significant step toward preserving biodiversity in Ukraine. Protecting rare plant species not only helps maintain the ecosystem but also raises public environmental awareness. This initiative could also lay the groundwork for developing eco-tourism and promoting the country's natural heritage.
