Polish Citizens Raise 30,000 Zloty for Buses to Vinnytsia in Just Hours After Politicians Refuse Aid.
Fundraising Campaign for Buses in Vinnytsia
According to Espreso.tv: When local politicians blocked the transfer of 15 buses from Poland to the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia, the civic organization Fundacja Sikorki na Ukrainie stepped in. They launched a fundraising drive to purchase replacement vehicles, setting a target of 500,000 zloty. Within just a few hours of the campaign's start, over 30,000 zloty had already been collected, demonstrating strong public support and a determination to assist the city despite political obstacles.
“This whole situation is riddled with holes.” - Maciej Jakubczyk, Chair of the Kielce City Council
Jakubczyk’s remark highlights his surprise and frustration over the refusal to hand over the buses, which could have significantly improved Vinnytsia’s public transportation network.
Public Organizations Take the Lead
Founded in Warsaw in 2022, Fundacja Sikorki na Ukrainie has been actively supporting Ukraine across various sectors. The organization is now taking on responsibilities that political bodies have failed to fulfill. “If the politicians can’t handle it, then we—the organization—will take charge,” representatives of the foundation stated.
This initiative not only underscores the growing role of civic groups in aiding Ukraine but also highlights the power of grassroots cooperation between cities and their residents during challenging times. When official channels fall short, ordinary citizens and organizations are proving ready to step up and deliver.
The fundraising for Vinnytsia’s buses reflects a broader trend: as state institutions prove ineffective, civil society is increasingly stepping in to address social needs. This situation also emphasizes the importance of local activism and cross-community collaboration, setting a potential example for other Ukrainian cities facing similar hurdles.
