Why Poland Hasn’t Sent MiG-29 Jets to Ukraine Yet: Warsaw Clarifies the Hold-Up.
Status of the MiG-29 Fighter Jet Transfer
According to TSN.ua: Poland has still not handed over its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, as negotiations over the terms of the transfer remain ongoing. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk confirmed that discussions are still in progress. He stated:
“We have not yet transferred the MiGs to Ukraine. We are waiting for the dialogue to conclude.” — Cezary Tomczyk
In January, Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Załewski announced a decision to transfer up to nine MiG-29s to Ukraine. However, the question of what Warsaw will receive in return for these aircraft has yet to be resolved. Tomczyk emphasized:
“The dialogue continues on what Warsaw will get in exchange for these fighters.” — Cezary Tomczyk
Poland’s Military Aid to Ukraine
Beyond the jet issue, Poland has already supplied Ukraine with 48 packages of military assistance totaling over €3.5 billion, underscoring its sustained support for Ukraine’s defense sector. Still, the fighter jet question remains a central focus for both countries.
The transfer of MiG-29s is a critical component of military cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine. Both nations continue their talks, highlighting the complexity and sensitivity of the process. At the same time, Poland’s robust military aid—including substantial deliveries so far—demonstrates Warsaw’s commitment to backing Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and security.
