Poland Blames Russian FSB for Energy Cyberattacks and Invests in Anti-Drone Defense.
Cyberattacks Target Polish Energy Infrastructure
According to UATV: Polish authorities have formally accused Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) of orchestrating a series of cyberattacks against the nation's energy sector in late December 2025. The sophisticated attacks, which targeted multiple wind and solar farms, a private manufacturing company, and a thermal power plant serving nearly half a million customers, have raised significant security concerns within the government. This incident is part of a broader pattern of hybrid threats facing NATO's eastern flank.
In response to these escalating threats, Poland signed a major defense contract on January 30, 2026, to acquire advanced anti-drone systems at a total cost of $1.67 billion.
Poland's Comprehensive Border Defense Initiative
The security situation has intensified following a previous drone attack in September 2025. The Warsaw government is now accelerating its 'Eastern Shield' project, a large-scale initiative designed to fortify 200 kilometers of its border by the end of 2026 to protect against hybrid aggression. Poland's strategic location makes it a frontline state for NATO's collective defense posture.
"We are fully aware of the threats and are preparing a response to them; all of this is being taken very seriously at the NATO level" - Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also highlighted that "air defense is the most vulnerable part of NATO's eastern flank." Reflecting the gravity of the regional security climate, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council Contact Group on Defense is scheduled for February 12 at NATO headquarters in Brussels to coordinate international efforts.
These developments underscore the heightened tensions in European security, particularly in the context of ongoing Russian aggression. As a key NATO member, Poland is taking proactive measures to safeguard its critical infrastructure and national security, actions that risk further straining relations between Russia and the Western alliance.
The international community, with NATO at its core, aims to ensure regional stability through collective action and mutual support. The upcoming Contact Group meeting represents a critical step in bolstering the defensive capabilities of Ukraine and other neighboring nations facing similar threats.
