Addressing Loneliness and Creating Jobs for Ukraine's 10 Million Pensioners.
The Challenge of Supporting Ukraine's Elderly Population
According to TSN.ua: Ihor Terekhov, Head of the Association of Professional Medical Groups (APMG), has highlighted the critical need to support Ukraine's elderly. With over 10 million pensioners in the country, more than half report feeling isolated and abandoned. This data underscores the urgent requirement for an effective social care system to ensure dignified living conditions for this vulnerable demographic.
Proposed Initiatives to Improve Social Care
Ihor Terekhov pointed out that
"the greatest problem in old age is loneliness". He has proposed a series of initiatives aimed at improving the situation, including:
- establishing a systematic model for social care;
- developing municipal social services;
- engaging public and private organizations.
These measures could help create between 100,000 and 150,000 new jobs in the care sector. This comes at a time when Ukraine's economy requires new growth sectors and employment opportunities.
Furthermore, Terekhov emphasized that
"a social care system is not just social policy. It also means new jobs". To stimulate the industry's growth, the proposal also includes introducing tax incentives for private social service providers. Implementing these initiatives could significantly enhance the quality of life for Ukraine's elderly population.
The issues of loneliness and inadequate support for the elderly are becoming increasingly pressing in Ukraine, given the growing proportion of pensioners within the general population. The initiatives proposed by Ihor Terekhov could not only improve the lives of this demographic but also contribute to economic development through job creation. Developing a robust social care framework is a vital step toward ensuring social justice and providing necessary support for vulnerable groups who require special attention and care.
