The 'Heart of Azovstal' Project

According to TSN.ua: Three years ago, Rinat Akhmetov established the 'Heart of Azovstal' project to provide support for the defenders of Mariupol. This initiative operates in close partnership with several key Ukrainian government bodies, including:

  • The Ombudsman's Office
  • The Coordination Headquarters
  • The Ministry of Veterans Affairs
  • The Ministry of Social Policy
  • The Ministry of Education and Science
  • The Ministry of Youth and Sports
  • The Employment Center

The project's work focuses on aiding veterans and their families, utilizing a specialized peer-to-peer methodology designed to foster post-traumatic growth.

Sustained Veteran Support

The program has trained 10 post-traumatic growth coaches from among Mariupol's defenders, creating a robust support system tailored to veterans' specific needs. A major component of this effort is housing assistance. In 2026, an additional 100 apartments will be provided to Mariupol defenders with group I or II disabilities under the 'At Home' program. Over a four-year period, a total of 400 defenders will receive housing, marking a significant commitment to those who served. This support is crucial in a nation where many veterans face significant challenges reintegrating into civilian life after combat.

Plans are also underway to scale the post-traumatic growth methodology to a national level, allowing the practices developed by the project to benefit a wider population. Pilot training for the community capacity development program will be launched in the cities of Bucha and Kamianske.

“The Heart of Azovstal will remain by your side,” emphasized Rinat Akhmetov, highlighting the ongoing importance of supporting defenders and their families during this difficult period.

The 'Heart of Azovstal' project represents a vital, systematic approach to veteran care amidst prolonged conflict. By addressing both immediate needs like housing and long-term psychological recovery, it sets a precedent for comprehensive support. Its planned national expansion could significantly enhance the effectiveness of aid for Ukrainian veterans across the country.
