Strontium Levels Near Sunken Soviet Submarine 'Komsomolets' Exceed Normal Readings by 400,000 Times in the Norwegian Sea.
The Wreck of the K-278 'Komsomolets' Submarine
According to TSN.ua: The sunken Soviet nuclear-powered submarine K-278 'Komsomolets' continues to leak radioactive substances on the floor of the Norwegian Sea, according to research conducted by Norwegian scientists. The submarine sank in April 1989 after a fire, resting at a depth of approximately 1,680 meters. It carries a nuclear reactor and two nuclear torpedoes, which have remained sealed since 1994.
The submarine's hull is gradually deteriorating, raising concerns among environmentalists and researchers. Analysis of samples collected during monitoring missions has detected isotopes of strontium, cesium, uranium, and plutonium. Near the wreck, strontium concentrations are 400,000 times higher than typical levels in the Norwegian Sea, while cesium levels exceed the norm by 800,000 times. These findings point to a serious environmental hazard in the region.
Ongoing Monitoring and Environmental Risks
Surveillance of the site has been ongoing since the 1990s, and in 2019, scientists conducted an extensive survey using the remotely operated vehicle Ægir 6000. These studies underscore the need to closely track the condition of the sunken submarine and the environmental impact of its decay.
The situation involving the 'Komsomolets' submarine highlights growing concerns over the legacy of nuclear technology and its effects on ecosystems, particularly as military assets age and deteriorate. The release of radioactive materials could have far-reaching consequences for marine life and the health of local populations, emphasizing the urgency of further research and safety measures. Incidents like this also raise questions about nations' responsibility for the disposal and oversight of nuclear objects in ocean waters.
