Massive Morning Assault on Kyiv: 211 Drones and Missiles Strike on March 16.
Kyiv Under Attack: March 16, 2023
According to TSN.ua: On the morning of March 16, 2023, Russia launched a combined assault on Kyiv, deploying dozens of drones along with several ballistic missiles. This attack was unusual because it occurred during the early hours. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, a total of 211 attack drones of various models—including Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas—were used in the operation.
Ukrainian air defense systems managed to intercept or suppress 194 of the incoming drones. However, 16 drone strikes were recorded across 10 different locations within Kyiv. Debris from the drones fell in the Shevchenkivskyi, Solomianskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts of the capital.
Expert Analysis
Military analyst Oleh Zhdanov noted that the timing of the assault—early in the morning—reflected a delayed response. He also emphasized that such attacks typically require only a few missiles and about two dozen Shahed drones to be effective.
“No Lancet drones can reach Kyiv,” said Serhiy Beskrestnov.
Activist Serhiy Sternenko added that this type of drone could have been transported closer to Kyiv specifically by using a Shahed as a carrier. The attack highlights emerging threats to Ukraine’s capital, and experts warn that preparedness for potential future strikes is essential.
The recent events in Kyiv underscore the growing threat posed by Russia in a conflict now spanning over a year. The use of drones and missile systems reflects an evolution in the aggressor’s tactics, which may require Ukrainian forces to adopt new approaches to air defense. This also reinforces the need for continued international support and modernization of Ukraine’s defensive capabilities to prevent similar attacks in the future.
