Russia and Iran plan to renew strategic partnership before Trump's inauguration.
Russia and Iran are preparing to sign a new agreement on strategic partnership before Trump's inauguration. According to the spokesperson of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the signing of the document may take place at the end of January, a few days before the newly elected U.S. president takes office.
According to experts, this way Moscow and Tehran want to strengthen cooperation, especially amid international isolation.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov, stated after Putin's meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that the new document formalizes the commitment to close defense cooperation and interaction for regional and global peace.
This new agreement will replace the existing 20-year treaty from 2001, which was extended until 2020. The document provides for cooperation in areas such as energy, industry, transport, and agriculture, according to the Iranian agency Mehr News Agency.
Previously, the agreement was complicated by Russia's position on the UAE's claims to the islands in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran considers its own. However, the countries have a common experience of circumventing Western sanctions.
'Although it is not explicitly stated, the agreement may lead to further cooperation in military technologies and intelligence sharing,' predicts Mohammed Soliman, director of the Strategic Technologies Program at the Middle East Institute.
On December 23, a Russian delegation headed by Deputy Prime Ministers Alexey Overchuk and Vitaly Savelyev went to Tehran to discuss partnership details.
According to analysts, Iran and Russia belong to the 'axis of evil' along with North Korea and China - states opposing the West. These countries are under sanctions due to aggression against Ukraine and a nuclear program, respectively. In addition, Tehran supplies Moscow with weapons for the war against Ukraine.
