Kursk Operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: Syrskyi Reveals Russian Losses and Key Achievements Over the Year

Exactly a year ago, on August 6, Ukrainian troops started an operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. Today, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, talked about the successes of the AFU and stated the enemy's losses within the Kursk operation.

The Commander-in-Chief of the AFU noted that August 6 is a significant date in the military history of Ukraine. For on this day in 2024, the Kursk offensive operation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine began, which for the first time transferred large-scale warfare onto the territory of the aggressor state. Syrskyi pointed out that this was a decisive and bold step in response to the enemy's preparation for a new offensive campaign in the northern part of Slobozhanshchyna.

'We did not wait for the strike — we dealt it ourselves. We proved that Ukraine is capable not only of defending but also of acting preemptively and attacking effectively,' emphasized the general.

Syrskyi reminded that after thorough planning of the operation, the AFU units managed to breach the enemy's defense, penetrate deep into the enemy's rear, and disrupt its logistics. According to him, at the peak of the operation, the Armed Forces of Ukraine controlled up to 1300 km² of the territory of the Kursk region.

'We demoralized the personnel of the Russians and forced them to transfer significant reserves to Kursk, weakening pressure on other fronts. At that time, we did not allow the enemy to implement the plans for the offensive and formed a buffer zone, thanks to which Sumy and Kharkiv remain on free Ukrainian land.'

Syrskyi on Russian Losses During the Kursk Operation

According to the general, over the year in the area of responsibility of the 'Kursk' military group, the Defense Forces inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. The Russian army, in total, lost over 77,000 servicemen killed and wounded (of which about 4,000 are citizens of the DPRK).

Additionally, 7236 units of Russian weaponry and military equipment were destroyed or damaged, including 211 tanks, 1083 armored personnel carriers, 907 artillery systems, 1 aircraft, 3 helicopters, 15 air defense systems, and 2795 units of automotive transport.

Syrskyi emphasized that the Kursk operation also provided invaluable humanitarian results: 1018 captured Russian servicemen replenished the exchange fund, allowing us to return hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers home, including those who had been in captivity since 2022.

On the anniversary of the operation in Kursk, General Oleksandr Syrskyi underscored the significance and success of this military action, where the Ukrainian troops demonstrated their readiness and effectiveness in conducting warfare, inflicting severe losses on the enemy and successfully fulfilling the assigned tasks. The Kursk operation not only strengthened the country's defense capability but also produced a humanitarian result in the form of prisoner exchanges, helping to bring Ukrainian warriors home.
