Discovery of the Annamese Striped Rabbit

According to TSN.ua: Conservationists have recently released rare footage of the Annamese striped rabbit, confirming its presence in Southeast Asia. This breakthrough was made possible through a biodiversity research project in the Annamite Mountains, launched in 2025 by the international organization Fauna & Flora. The images were made public in February 2026.

Threats and Conservation Efforts

The Annamese striped rabbit (Nesolagus timminsi) is classified as critically vulnerable. Known to science since the mid-1990s, this species faces significant pressure from:

  • poaching
  • exotic animal trade
  • extensive lowland development

These factors are driving a decline in the rabbit's population, raising serious concerns among conservationists.

The Fauna & Flora project involved setting up camera traps across an area spanning roughly 680 miles (1,100 kilometers). This effort not only captured the Annamese striped rabbit but also documented other species, including serows, Asian elephants, Sunda pangolins, and lion-tailed macaques. As Gareth Goldthorpe noted:

“These images confirmed for us the biodiversity of these areas.”

Despite challenges related to project funding due to budget cuts by the UK government, Goldthorpe expressed hope for the preservation of this unique species:

“There is still hope.”

This underscores the importance of continued conservation efforts and support for biodiversity in the region.

The discovery of the Annamese striped rabbit highlights the critical need to protect biological diversity and take active measures to safeguard vulnerable species. The Fauna & Flora project, despite financial hurdles, demonstrates that joint efforts by international organizations can significantly impact ecosystem conservation. Successful research not only confirms the existence of rare species but also raises awareness about conservation challenges in the region.
