Tick Infestation Hits Rivne Region: 24 Specimens Found in Just 20 Minutes at a Local Park.
Ixodid Tick Season Is Underway in the Rivne Region
According to TSN.ua: Health authorities have issued a warning as the ixodid tick season begins in the Rivne region, with a notable surge in tick numbers across parks and green spaces. On March 19, the Rivne Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported heightened tick activity, sparking concern among local residents. This region in western Ukraine is now facing a heightened risk of tick-borne illnesses.
Risks and Preventive Measures
During monitoring in the Park on the Hill of Glory, researchers discovered 24 ticks along a one-kilometer route in just 20 minutes. In natural habitats, tick counts can reach as high as 40 individuals per flag-kilometer, indicating a significant infection risk. Last year, 191 cases of ixodid tick-borne borreliosis were recorded in the Rivne region—an 18% increase compared to 2021. Notably, nearly 18% of the ticks collected were found to carry borreliosis pathogens.
Experts urge the public to adopt specific precautions to prevent tick bites. Key recommendations include:
- sticking to designated paths;
- wearing closed, light-colored clothing;
- regularly checking yourself and your children for ticks;
- using repellents with acaricidal properties.
Following these simple guidelines can significantly lower the chances of encountering these potentially dangerous pests and help safeguard your health.
The current tick activity in the Rivne region serves as an alarming signal for locals, as the rising numbers could lead to a spike in disease cases. Given last year's statistics, it is crucial to take preventive steps to avoid bites and potential health complications. Prevention remains the key to combating these disease carriers, and a mindful approach to visiting natural areas can substantially reduce public health risks.
