Russian Strike on Ukrainian Railways Disrupts Service Across Multiple Regions.
Railway Infrastructure Targeted in February 11th Attack
According to TSN.ua: On February 11th, Russian military forces struck Ukrainian railway infrastructure, causing damage in the Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy regions. The assault damaged locomotives, rail cars, and fixed infrastructure, including technical rolling stock in the city of Konotop, Sumy region. This attack is part of a wider pattern of targeting Ukraine's critical civilian transport networks.
Widespread Service Disruptions and Alternative Transport
In response to the attack, railway authorities have implemented safety-driven schedule changes. In the Sumy region, local trains continue to run to Konotop and Krolevets. However, service on the Snovsk – Bakhmach – Snovsk route in the Chernihiv region is currently suspended. In Kharkiv Oblast, bus replacements are operating for passengers on the Lozova – Barvinkove – Kramatorsk section. Furthermore, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, trains are either being rerouted or substituted with bus services.
According to Oleksiy Kuleba, no railway workers were injured in the attack, and emergency repair crews are already working on-site to restore operations.
This highlights efforts to quickly repair the infrastructure and ensure passenger safety. The incident follows another Russian strike on northern Ukrainian railways just days earlier, which also damaged infrastructure and locomotives.
The railway attack underscores the ongoing conflict's impact on Ukraine's vital infrastructure. The immediate implementation of schedule changes and bus replacements demonstrates the adaptability of Ukrainian rail workers in maintaining passenger transport under difficult conditions. It also points to the continued need for enhanced protection of railway assets in vulnerable regions. Restoring this infrastructure remains a critical priority for ensuring the stability of the country's national transport system.
