Threat of Attack on Bortnychi Aeration Station

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian authorities warn that Russia is preparing an airstrike against the strategically vital Bortnychi Aeration Station in Kyiv. The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs has advised residents to stockpile food and water in anticipation of the potential fallout from such an attack. This facility is a cornerstone of the capital's sanitation system. Earlier predictions of an imminent strike on the plant did not materialize following the attack on Kyiv on the night of February 12, 2023.

Located on the left bank of the Dnipro River, the Bortnychi Aeration Station processes all sewage from Kyiv and several nearby satellite cities. The importance of this facility cannot be overstated, as its damage could trigger severe environmental and public health crises.

“It would not only be an ecological catastrophe but a public health one as well.”

Oleh Popenko, Head of the Union of Utility Services Consumers

He further cautioned that “if this happens in summer, problems will arise instantly,” adding that “the entire system could shut down.”

Potential Risks and Consequences

Oleksandr Sokolenko has suggested that 'striking in mid-February with the expectation that our sewage will freeze is unlikely.' However, the risks associated with a potential attack on the facility remain a pressing concern. Popenko warns that if the Bortnychi station is damaged, 'the city will shut down within two weeks.' This highlights the grave danger posed to critical infrastructure and the cascading problems it would create for the entire metropolitan area.

The sheer scale of the Bortnychi Aeration Station and the vulnerability of the pipelines leading to it make this a particularly sensitive target for potential airstrikes. An attack could quickly lead to a critical and catastrophic situation. Therefore, the circumstances surrounding the plant demand close attention from both authorities and Kyiv residents, who must prepare for possible challenges.

The threat to the Bortnychi Aeration Station underscores the critical need to protect essential infrastructure during wartime. Residents of the capital must be aware of the potential risks and adhere to government guidelines for emergency preparedness. Simultaneously, the urgent necessity of securing facilities like Bortnychi demonstrates the broader imperative to strengthen Ukraine's overall defensive capabilities.
