Drone Strike Damages Historic Stained Glass in Lviv Church on January 15.
Drone Attack Targets Lviv
According to TSN.ua: On January 15, 2023, a drone attack struck the city of Lviv, causing significant damage to the stained glass windows of the Church of Saints Olha and Elizabeth. This attack on a major cultural site is part of a wider pattern of threats to Ukraine's architectural heritage during the ongoing war. The church, situated on Kropyvnytskyi Square near the railway station, was completed in 1911 and features spires reaching 88 meters in height.
During the assault, an air raid alert was active from 06:07 to 06:50. The blast wave shattered the stained glass and also injured a snowplow operator, though there were no fatalities. The church holds particular architectural significance as it housed Ukraine's first stained-glass iconostasis, installed in 2016.
Response from Local Officials
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stated that 'the stained glass in the cathedral is damaged. This is an architectural monument.'
Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, confirmed that 'the stained glass windows in the Church of Saints Olha and Elizabeth have been damaged.'
This incident underscores the persistent dangers facing Ukraine's cultural landmarks. The destruction not only harms the nation's architectural legacy but also deeply affects the local community for whom the church is a vital spiritual and cultural center. Repairing the damage will likely demand considerable effort and resources, posing yet another challenge for a region already grappling with the severe consequences of war.
