Energy Infrastructure Targeted in Chernihiv Region Drone Attack

According to TSN.ua: On January 18, Russian drone strikes targeted the energy infrastructure of Ukraine's Chernihiv region, cutting off electricity to approximately 100 settlements. The northern communities were hit hardest, with repair crews currently working to restore services. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian energy grid during the winter months.

The assault focused on energy facilities, with documented strikes by 'Shahed' drones (also known as 'Geranium') in the Kholmyn, Novhorod-Siverskyi, Mena, and Koriukivka communities. In the city of Mena, a drone hit an industrial enterprise, sparking a fire. In Snovsk, a drone struck a community cultural center, damaging its roof, windows, doors, and main hall. A 45-year-old woman was wounded during the attack.

Regional Conditions

The head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, Viacheslav Chaus, reported that the region has recorded 48 instances of shelling and 91 explosions. Repair efforts are ongoing, but the consequences of the attack are already being felt across a significant number of communities. The Chernihiv region borders Russia and Belarus and has been a frequent target since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

This incident underscores the continuation of military actions that directly impact Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure. Restoring electricity and other essential services in the affected communities is an urgent priority for local authorities. Such attacks highlight the vital importance of protecting critical infrastructure during armed conflict.
