NJCU calls for increased protection of journalists on the front line: what will change.
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine calls on international partners to enhance security, armor protection, and evacuation programs for Ukrainian journalists who risk their lives every day on the front line. This was stated by the head of NJCU, Serhiy Tomilenko, as reported by 'Glavkom'.
According to inkorr.com: The world cannot remain indifferent when journalists are killed by drones. NJCU emphasizes the need to strengthen security measures, armor protection, and evacuation programs for journalists who risk their lives every day on the front line.
Recommendations for editorial offices near the front line
- Immediately review safety protocols.
- Understand that the time for arrival in Kramatorsk and subsequent departure to the front has run out.
- Plan work considering minimum stay time, dispersing equipment, monitoring drone activity, and alternative evacuation routes.
- Listen to the instructions of press officers and defense forces, objectively assessing risks during task execution.
The tragic fate of journalists
Alona Hramova (Hubanova) was a journalist from the Donetsk region who transitioned from finance to being the voice of her region. Since 2021, she has worked as a war correspondent for state foreign broadcasting channels, covering events in Donbas from the first days of the war. In 2023, she was awarded the Order of Princess Olga III class.
Yevhen Karmazin, a cameraman from Kramatorsk, worked for Ukrainian foreign broadcasting channels since 2022. He was only 33 years old.
Freedom, in its address, noted: 'Alona Hramova constantly worked in the hottest spots of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions, telling the world the truth about how Russian troops destroy her native Donetsk. She remained in Kramatorsk to show what its people are going through.'
The journalist of the Freedom channel, Olena Hubanova, and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin have died. As Vadym Filashkin reported, these media professionals were covering the situation in Donetsk, revealing facts of enemy crimes and the evacuation process of the civilian population.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky also reacted to the murder of journalist Olena Hubanova and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin, expressing condolences to their families and wishing recovery to the colleague who survived.
NJCU emphasizes the need for additional security measures for Ukrainian journalists who face danger on the front line, stressing the importance of their protection and evacuation programs. As a result of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, prominent journalists who conveyed the truth about the horrific events in Donbas have already been killed.
This tragedy is yet another confirmation of the danger faced by journalists in carrying out their important mission in wartime conditions. Every day, media workers risk their lives trying to deliver the truth to the world about events in Ukraine. NJCU's call to international partners aims not only to save journalists' lives but also to improve the conditions for performing their work.
