Parasomnia: causes and recommendations

According to ТСН: Restless sleep with frequent movements may result from untreated anxiety. However, sometimes it may indicate the onset of a degenerative brain disease.

General practitioner Ellie Cannon writes in her column that talking in your sleep and excessive movements during sleep are known as parasomnia.

"This is unusual behavior that occurs during sleep. It also includes sleepwalking, crying, and sleep paralysis - when patients feel they are awake but cannot move,"

the doctor states. According to him, parasomnia may indicate such conditions as obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs due to the closure of the larynx during sleep, or anxiety disorders.

"In some cases, parasomnia may be an early symptom of Parkinson's disease,"

Cannon asserts. He also notes that this phenomenon may result from the intake of certain medications, including antidepressants and, paradoxically, sleeping pills. However, in most cases, doctors cannot accurately determine the cause of this condition.

"Symptoms can be reduced by consuming less alcohol and caffeine, as well as going to bed at approximately the same time every evening. Sleeping in a dark room with a cool temperature and minimal noise can help. It is also important to avoid using screens and eating immediately before sleep,"

the doctor advises. He also notes that magnesium supplements, which can be found in most pharmacies and are generally safe, may help some patients with parasomnia.

Experts also emphasize that some people have a heightened sensitivity to caffeine, so it is advisable to avoid consuming coffee before sleep.

Parasomnia is a serious phenomenon that requires attention. It is important to monitor your sleep and any unusual manifestations. If you notice that your sleep is accompanied by specific or alarming moments, it is advisable to consult a physician for advice and possible examination. Healthy sleep is the key to overall well-being.
