Woman Sentenced to Five Years for Extorting $20,000 in Fake 'Cleansing Ritual'.
Verdict in Case of Psychological Coercion Against a Minor
According to TSN.ua: A court in Ivano-Frankivsk has sentenced a woman to five years in prison for psychologically coercing a minor into handing over all of her family's gold jewelry and $20,000 for a fabricated 'cleansing ritual'. This type of fraud, which preys on superstitious beliefs, is an ongoing issue in the region. The crime occurred in October 2015, when the defendant extorted significant funds and valuables from the victim.
The Ivano-Frankivsk City Court also ruled to confiscate all of the convicted woman's property. She caused material damages totaling nearly 560,000 hryvnias, which included:
- $20,000 USD (equivalent to over 445,000 hryvnias at the time)
- 19 items of gold jewelry, including:
- chains
- bracelets
- rings
- earrings
- a man's signet ring
In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the convict to pay over 560,000 hryvnias in combined material and moral damages to the victimized girl and her father. This verdict underscores the gravity of a crime committed through the psychological manipulation of a minor.
