According to ТСН: The protective arch over the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant no longer fulfills its main functions. The new structure was damaged as a result of the Russian strike in February of this year.

IAEA Report

The IAEA report states that the sarcophagus is made in the form of a large steel structure designed to prevent the release of radioactive materials from the reactor, which was damaged during the accident in 1986.

Assessment Results

During the assessment, the IAEA mission found that:

  • the sarcophagus 'has lost its main safety functions', including its ability to isolate;

  • the supporting structures and monitoring systems have not sustained permanent damage.

"Limited temporary repairs were carried out on the roof, but timely and comprehensive restoration remains crucial to prevent further degradation and ensure long-term nuclear safety," said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

IAEA Recommendations

The IAEA recommended continuing the restoration and strengthening of the protective structures of the sarcophagus: implement humidity control, update the corrosion monitoring program, and modernize the automatic monitoring system for the condition of the shelter built over the reactor after the accident.

It was also reported that on October 1, the Chernobyl NPP was left without electricity due to the Russian shelling of Slavutych. This resulted in critical voltage spikes in the network, which caused the new safe confinement, known as the “Arch,” to lose power.

Furthermore, it is mentioned that on February 14, 2025, the Russian army struck the sarcophagus of the destroyed fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant with a drone, leading to its actual breach. However, the radiation background after the attack remained within normal limits.

It is important to note that the situation around the Chernobyl NPP continues to raise concerns. Damage to the protective arch and the lack of electricity could have serious consequences for the safety of the region. Restoring the protective structures is a priority to ensure a stable and safe situation at the site, where the results of the 1986 accident are studied.
