Sharp cooling in Ukraine from December 13: where to expect frosts down to -12°C

According to ТСН: At the beginning of December, autumn weather prevails in Ukraine, and there is still no real winter. In some regions, the first snow has already fallen, with a thickness ranging from 1 to 7 cm, but soon the snow will melt.

Forecaster Igor Kibalchich noted in a comment that sharp changes in the weather are expected in the coming days, particularly nights with frosts that may reach over -10 °C.

Cooling after December 13

The most significant drop in temperature is expected in the Left Bank, from the northern and eastern regions. The coldest nights will occur on December 16, when in the eastern and Dnipropetrovsk regions the temperature may drop to -9…-12 °C. However, after December 16, a return of warm weather with daytime temperatures of +1…+7 °C and nighttime around 0 °C is possible.

Forecast for December 11–12

In most of the country's territory, wet and gloomy weather is expected with light precipitation in the form of rain, fog, and drizzle. Nighttime temperatures will range from -1 to +6 °C, during the day - from +2 to +7 °C, in the south and west - up to +8…+10 °C. The wind will be westerly, 7–12 m/s.

From December 13, a sharp cold snap is likely due to the arrival of cold air masses from Finland and the Kola Peninsula. The temperature in the Left Bank may drop to -8 °C at night and -4…+1 °C during the day. The wind will be northwesterly, gusty, up to 15–20 m/s.

Peak frosts

The coldest night is projected on December 16 in the eastern and Dnipropetrovsk regions. In the Right Bank and southern regions, daytime temperatures will mainly remain above zero, with slight nighttime frosts.

After December 16, a warming trend is expected:

  • Night temperature: around 0 °C

  • Day temperature: +1…+7 °C

Igor Kibalchich emphasized that in the next 10 days, Ukrainians should be prepared for significant changes in weather conditions due to alternating cyclones and anticyclones. A stable snow cover is not anticipated in most regions, except for the highlands of the Carpathians.

It was previously reported that according to preliminary forecasts, strong frosts are not expected in Ukraine.

The weather situation in Ukraine may change significantly in the coming days, as the alternation of warm and cold air masses will lead to sharp fluctuations in temperature. The coldest nights in December are likely to occur in the middle of the month, but by the winter holidays, Ukrainians can expect milder temperatures.
