Severe weather paralyzes Ukraine: rescuers report on the consequences

According to ТСН: A severe storm has hit Ukraine. In the Odesa region, rescuers pulled several cars out, including two ambulances, while trees blocked roads in the Vinnytsia and Cherkasy regions. Blizzards have been ongoing in the west of the country for several days.

TSN correspondents have prepared current information on how the country is dealing with the elements.

Rivnen and Zhytomyr regions: paralyzed highways and the rescue of a pregnant woman

In Rivne, the blizzard has calmed down, but instead of snow, intense frosts have arrived. Traffic for trucks has been suspended on the "Ustyluh-Rivne" and "Kyiv-Chop" highways due to snowdrifts, leading to numerous traffic jams.

In the Zhytomyr region, the situation was no less complicated: passengers pushed trolleybuses that could not climb snow-covered roads. The situation became particularly critical when a car with a pregnant woman was trapped in a snow trap.

Iryna Romaniuk, spokeswoman for the State Emergency Service of Zhytomyr region: "A passenger car with a pregnant woman got stuck in a snowdrift; rescuers promptly towed the car to a cleared road.".

Rescuers warn that temperatures in Rivne may drop to -18°C. There are already the first victims of the cold — an 85-year-old woman spent several hours in a snowdrift before being discovered by a police officer. The pensioner suffered serious frostbite.

Carpathian region: snowdrifts up to 70 cm and blocked villages

Over 20 cm of snow fell in Ivano-Frankivsk, while snowdrifts in the Carpathians reach 70 cm. Rescuers are working continuously: in one day they pulled 7 buses and cars, saving 40 people, including children.

In the Hordyshiv region, due to wind and snowdrifts, communication between some villages was interrupted. Equipment is working to provide power workers access to affected areas. In Ivano-Frankivsk itself, local entrepreneurs are also joining the street clearing efforts.

A resident of the city: "No need to complain. We need to stand up and work. It hasn’t been this winter for a long time.".

Lviv region: students go on vacation

Lviv received 70% of its monthly precipitation in just two days. Due to the abnormal snowfall and predicted frosts, local authorities decided to extend winter holidays for students.

Andriy Zakaliuk, head of the Education Department of Lviv City Council: "The weather conditions are quite challenging. We are not advocates of online learning, so, indeed, — vacations, having adjusted the timeframe of the second semester.".

The roads in Lviv are passable but very slippery. Over the past two days, about 150 people have been hospitalized with injuries from slips on ice. Meteorologists warn that a temperature of -10°C with piercing wind feels like -20°C.

The bad weather that has enveloped the Ukrainian regions has reliably demonstrated that the importance of rescue services in such moments cannot be overstated. In the event of a natural disaster, the efforts of everyone, from professionals to local residents, become crucial for ensuring safety and saving lives. Forecasts for the coming days do not promise improvement in weather conditions, so residents should be particularly careful and follow the recommendations of specialists. Additionally, due to the challenging conditions, restoring normal road and communication functions may take a long time.
