Tourist Hospitalized After Snow Leopard Attack in China, Ignored Warnings for Selfie.
Tourist Injured in Snow Leopard Encounter at Chinese Geopark
According to TSN.ua: A woman was hospitalized after a snow leopard attacked her while she attempted to take a selfie, having disregarded repeated safety warnings. The incident occurred at the UNESCO Global Geopark of Keketuohai, where local authorities have frequently alerted visitors to the presence of the big cats. Snow leopards are elusive and critically endangered predators, making such a close encounter exceptionally rare and dangerous.
The tourist approached within approximately three meters of the animal, which triggered an aggressive response. The leopard pounced, pinning the woman to the snow. A ski instructor intervened at the critical moment, driving the animal away by striking it with his poles. Following the attack, the tourist was hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.
Safety Guidelines for Visitors
It is important to note that snow leopards are classified as a vulnerable species, with China being home to an estimated 60% of the global population. The geopark administration has urged all visitors to adhere to strict safety protocols:
- Remain inside your vehicle at all times;
- Do not approach wildlife for photography;
- Never hike alone in these areas.
Disregarding these guidelines can lead to dangerous confrontations, as demonstrated by this recent event.
This case underscores the vital importance of following safety rules in nature reserves, particularly in regions inhabited by wildlife. Given the known activity of snow leopards in this area, visitors must exercise extreme caution to avoid perilous situations. Public education and clear communication of potential risks are essential to preventing similar incidents in the future.
