How a Cat Sees Its Owner: Why Your Pet Can't Distinguish Faces.
According to ТСН: Many cat owners believe that their pets perceive their faces in the same detail as humans do. However, research indicates that a cat's visual system operates on entirely different principles. When a cat looks at a person, it does not discern clear facial features, but sees only a set of silhouettes, movements, and energy signals.
Features of Cat Vision
Cats' vision is dichromatic, and they perceive the surrounding world mainly in shades of gray, blue, and yellow. Red and green appear dull or indistinct to them.
Nature has compensated for this peculiarity of cats with other advantages:
Cats can see in the dark 6-8 times better than humans, detecting even ultraviolet light and the slightest glimmer.
They can notice the tiniest fluctuations, shadows, or specks of dust that the human eye may miss.
Cats have a visual field of 200 degrees (compared to 180 in humans), providing them with excellent peripheral vision.
Interestingly, a human's face looks blurred to a cat from a distance. A cat can clearly distinguish its owner only at a distance of 1 to 6 meters.
Since a cat does not always see the details of appearance, it uses other markers. The animal perceives its owner as a member of its social group – a large, strange cat that takes care of it.
Purring and rubbing against your legs often express juvenile behavior: the cat sees the human as a maternal figure that looks after it.
Cats' Empathy
Moreover, fluffy companions are great empaths. They 'read' a person's intentions from:
The tone of voice;
Facial expressions (even if they are blurred);
The overall energy and body movements.
This is how a cat understands whether you are annoyed, calm, or happy, even without looking you in the eye. Recognizing 'their own' occurs through a combination of factors: sight, voice, and, of course, smell.
How a Cat Says 'I Love You'
A cat's eyes are also a tool for communication. If you notice your pet staring at you and slowly blinking, this is the highest compliment from its side. This behavior is known as the 'cat smile' or 'eye kiss.' It is the highest sign of trust and love.
In contrast, a piercing, unblinking gaze may indicate curiosity or an attempt to understand your next actions. While looking at you, a cat processes all visual and auditory signals to decide whether to approach for play or stay away for safety.
It should not be forgotten that cats not only delight their owners but also genuinely improve their mental and physical state. Interacting with them helps lower stress levels and strengthen the heart.
Cats always remain mysterious creatures that fill our lives with joy and emotions. Understanding their psychology and the nuances of how they perceive the world can help owners better understand their fluffy friends and establish even closer connections with them.
