How the US Special Envoy Dodged Vodka at a Dinner with Lukashenko.
Navigating the Challenges of a Banquet in Belarus
According to TSN.ua: US President’s Special Envoy John Coole has opened up about the difficulties of attending a banquet hosted by Belarus’s self-proclaimed president, Alexander Lukashenko. During an American delegation’s visit to Minsk, Coole faced pressure to partake in the local drinking tradition and toast to Lukashenko. 'You must drink to him,' State Department officials reportedly insisted.
In his remarks, John Coole stated that he ultimately consumed only two shots of vodka—more than enough, in his view. The comment sparked a reaction from Belarusian propagandist Grigory Azarenok, who weighed in on the situation:
“About John, the one pouring vodka. We don’t like people like that here. Not in back-alley gatherings, and not in big politics.” – Grigory Azarenok
Risks for American Diplomats
Notably, during the same trip to Kyiv, US General Antonio Aguto sustained a head injury. This incident underscores the challenges and risks American diplomats face while carrying out their duties in the region.
This situation highlights not only the traditional aspects of political socializing but also the difficulties international diplomats encounter in countries with authoritarian regimes. The pressure on US representatives to comply with local customs may reflect Lukashenko’s efforts to bolster his image and legitimize his rule, despite widespread international criticism.
