SBU Detains NABU Detective at Sumy Checkpoint: Russian Phone Numbers Found.
NABU Officer Detained at Checkpoint
According to TSN.ua: During an enhanced counterintelligence operation in the frontline region, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) detained an officer from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) at a checkpoint near the entrance to Sumy. The incident occurred amid heightened security measures implemented in areas close to the conflict zone, where the SBU is responsible for maintaining safety and surveillance.
The detained individual originally comes from territories currently under temporary occupation. When asked for identification, he only presented a page from the Diia app, raising further doubts about his identity. A search of his phone revealed several Russian phone numbers, which significantly increased suspicion. It was later confirmed that the NABU detective was in Sumy on an official work assignment.
SBU and NABU Respond
The SBU stated that
“during a full-scale invasion, SBU personnel work around the clock to enforce counterintelligence protocols at checkpoints in the country's frontline regions.”In contrast, NABU reported that
“an NABU officer was unjustifiably detained by SBU personnel at a checkpoint near the entrance to Sumy.”
This incident has sparked ongoing debate, with SBU representatives emphasizing that any manipulation of the situation is unacceptable. The detention highlights the critical importance of adhering to counterintelligence measures in Ukraine's complex security environment.
The event underscores the tense and challenging security landscape in Ukraine, where counterintelligence operations are vital during wartime. It also points to potential friction between the SBU and NABU, which may reflect deeper issues within the country's law enforcement system. These tensions require careful attention to ensure both anti-corruption efforts and national security measures remain effective.
