Court Orders Woman to Repay 250,000 Hryvnias for Fraudulently Obtained Social Benefits.
Verdict from the Tyachiv District Court
According to TSN.ua: The Tyachiv District Court in the Zakarpattia region has ruled against a woman who illegally received state social assistance for seven years by concealing her family's ownership of vehicles. The court has ordered her to reimburse the state more than 249,000 hryvnias. This case is part of broader efforts in Ukraine to combat welfare fraud and protect public funds.
In June 2015, the accused applied to the Tyachiv Social Protection Office, declaring that no members of her household owned any means of transport. However, at the time of filing this property declaration, her husband already had two registered motorcycles: a 'Zhejiang' and a 'Musstang'. Furthermore, in 2021, her husband purchased a 'Hyundai Santa Fe' car for 250,000 hryvnias, which was also omitted from the declaration.
Outcome of the Legal Proceedings
The court found the woman guilty of crimes under Parts 1 and 2 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. She was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment but was exempted from serving this term, instead receiving a 1-year probation period. For the first episode of her crime, she was released from punishment due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. In total, she is obligated to repay the state 249,547 hryvnias and 24 kopiykas.
The court also ordered the seizure of the convicted woman's 'Ford Ecosport' vehicle. The verdict resulted from an investigation that uncovered the facts of illegal benefit receipt and property concealment.
This case underscores the critical importance of transparency and honesty when citizens interact with state institutions, particularly concerning social benefit claims. Authorities continue to actively combat social security fraud as part of a wider strategy to improve Ukraine's social protection system.
It was noted that such cases can have serious consequences not only for the individuals involved but also for the integrity of the nation's entire social security framework.
