Massive fires in Australia: hundreds of homes destroyed, thousands without power.
According to ТСН: Serious wildfires continue in southeastern Australia, destroying hundreds of buildings and burning large areas. This has led to widespread power outages.
Situation in Victoria
Australian emergency services report that in Victoria, where there is currently severe heat, the fire has engulfed over 300,000 hectares of forests and agricultural land. At present, efforts are ongoing to combat at least ten major fire fronts in the region.
Thousands of rescuers and firefighters are engaged in the battle against the fires. Despite their efforts, the disaster has caused significant damage: over 130 buildings have been destroyed, including residential, utility structures, and agricultural infrastructure. Approximately 38,000 households and businesses have been left without electricity.
Threat to the population
The authorities of Victoria have stated that these fires are the most extensive in the state since the 'Black Summer' of 2019-2020, when the flames destroyed large areas and claimed 33 lives.
The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, stated that rescue services are operating in an enhanced mode and are trying to bring the fires under control wherever weather conditions allow. According to her, the situation remains extremely complicated, and the risks of fire spread persist.
The Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, warned of 'extremely dangerous' weather conditions that contribute to the spread of fires. A significant portion of Victoria has been officially declared a disaster zone.
The government leader also expressed support for residents of the affected areas, emphasizing that the federal government is coordinating its work with local authorities and emergency services.
Evacuation and weather conditions
A large fire is particularly active near Longwood, approximately 110 kilometers north of Melbourne. Here, the fire has burned about 130,000 hectares, destroying dozens of buildings and agricultural land.
Due to the threat to the lives of residents, evacuations have been organized in several populated areas, and national parks, campgrounds, and tourist zones have been closed.
Forecasters report that a wave of extreme heat has engulfed large areas of Victoria and New South Wales. In some regions, temperatures exceed +45°C, complicating firefighting efforts.
In Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, the temperature reached 42.2°C, nearly 17 degrees above average January figures. Meteorologists note that such weather conditions increase the risk of new fire outbreaks across the country.
It should be noted that recently, for the first time in many years, snow fell in Australia, but now the country is facing new challenges due to adverse weather conditions and massive fires. The situation remains tense, and rescue services are working under difficult conditions to protect the population and swiftly extinguish the fire disaster.
