Train Collision with a Herd of Elephants in India: Seven Animals Die.
According to ТСН: Seven elephants were killed, and another was injured as a result of a collision between a passenger train and a herd in northeastern India. The accident occurred in the Hojai district of Assam state early Saturday morning.
According to Hojai District Police Chief V. V. Rakesh Reddy, the train was heading towards Delhi. The incident happened in an area not considered a migration corridor for elephants. The driver, noticing the animals on the tracks, attempted to brake urgently, but the elephants suddenly darted towards the train.
Consequences of the Incident
The collision occurred at 2:17 local time, causing the locomotive and five cars to derail. According to railway information, there were no casualties among passengers and staff.
Status of Rail Operations
Currently, traffic on this section is restricted, and trains are being temporarily diverted to alternative routes. Restoration work is underway.
This incident once again highlights the dangers faced by both animals and railroad transport in regions where their paths intersect. Authorities hope to improve safety for wild animals and railway passengers to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
