Trump Announces Meeting with Lukashenko After Release of 250 Political Prisoners.
Trump and Lukashenko to Meet
According to TSN.ua: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a forthcoming meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, expressing gratitude for the release of 250 political prisoners. Trump noted that the total number of freed individuals since May of last year has now exceeded 500. He emphasized that negotiations held last week marked a significant step toward improving bilateral relations.
On March 19, Alexander Lukashenko met with a U.S. delegation led by Special Envoy John Coale. As a result of those talks, a decision was made to pardon 250 political detainees. Trump thanked Lukashenko for this move, stating:
“Last week, my envoy to Belarus, John Coale, secured the release of another 250 political prisoners after negotiations with the highly respected President Alexander Lukashenko!” — Donald Trump
Trump also expressed eagerness for the upcoming meeting, saying:
“I would like to express my warmest gratitude to the President for this act and look forward to meeting him at the next session of the ‘Peace Council’!” — Donald Trump
On March 20, Lukashenko received an invitation from Trump to visit his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. On March 23, the Financial Times reported that the Trump administration is considering inviting Lukashenko to the White House or Mar-a-Lago.
This development highlights how the release of political prisoners in Belarus has become a pivotal element in U.S.-Belarus diplomatic relations, potentially reshaping regional international politics. The list of freed political prisoners includes the following names:
- Katerina Andreeva
- Eduard Palchis
- Nastya Loyko
The freeing of political detainees in Belarus and the renewed dialogue between Washington and Minsk could mark a turning point in the geopolitical landscape. These events signal a possible thaw in ties that had previously been strained by human rights abuses and Lukashenko’s authoritarian rule. Observers will be watching closely for further steps from both sides, which could affect regional stability and security.
