Trump raises tariffs on imports from India to 50%: what is the reason.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods from India. Thus, tariffs are raised to 50%.
What tariffs did Trump impose on India
The additional 25% tariff complements any other tariffs or fees, but does not apply to shipments with special exemptions provided by other orders.
'I received additional information from various high-ranking officials regarding, among other things, the actions of the government of the Russian Federation concerning the situation in Ukraine. Considering this additional information, among other things, I believe that the state of emergency in the country continues and that the actions and policies of the government of the Russian Federation continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.'
The President emphasized that in order to address the state of emergency in the country, he considers it necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem tariff on imports of goods from India that directly or indirectly import oil from the Russian Federation.
'In my opinion, imposing tariffs in addition to maintaining other measures will allow us to more effectively address the state of emergency in the country.'
Trump is confident that the government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation.
When will the new tariffs for India take effect?
The tariff takes effect 21 days after signing and applies to goods imported or removed from the warehouse after this time, except for shipments that were already en route — until September 17, 2025.
The United States will also monitor which countries are importing Russian oil and will, if necessary, prepare recommendations for imposing similar tariffs against them.
