Turkey is sinking: hundreds of giant sinkholes are swallowing the lands of Konya.
According to ТСН: Numerous large sinkholes have been discovered in various parts of Turkey, some reaching significant depths. The situation is particularly alarming in the region of the Konya Plain, an important agricultural area of the country.
Causes of Sinkholes
The emergence of such craters has become a topic of discussion among religious commentators. Some have linked these phenomena to biblical prophecies about the 'opening of the earth', which has gained popularity against the backdrop of mass collapses. However, scientists point out that such interpretations lack scientific grounding.
According to data from Turkey's Disaster Management Authority, at least 648 significant sinkholes have been recorded in the Konya Plain. Scientists confirm that the main causes are:
prolonged drought, exacerbated by climate change;
massive extraction of groundwater, leading to the drying of underground cavities;
ground subsidence in areas of intensive agriculture.
Consequences and Geography of the Issue
Over the past year, professors from Konya Technical University have discovered more than 20 new collapses. In total, by 2021, there were about 1900 areas at risk of subsidence.
Due to the lowering of groundwater levels, wells are drying up, yields are decreasing, and farmland is being destroyed. Many farmers are forced to abandon their fields as they consider these places unsafe for work.
The diameter of some sinkholes exceeds 30 meters, and the land swallows both agricultural areas and roads.
Researchers warn that similar phenomena are observed not only in Turkey but also in the USA, Australia, Asian countries, and the Middle East. In the USA, in particular, sinkholes are forming in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida. The extraction of water from underground limestone formations there leads to the collapse of structures that support the land.
In some regions, ground subsidence is observed at six inches or more per year, creating a risk of new dangerous craters forming.
Scientists caution that without strict control over groundwater extraction, the scale of the problem could increase. Already now, sinkholes are being recorded in Turkey and the USA that appear overnight near houses, roads, and farms.
Experts strongly recommend that governments revise water policies, monitor groundwater use, and enhance irrigation systems to prevent further collapses.
It is worth noting that scientists predict that in 250 million years our planet could reunite into a new supercontinent, likely Pangaea Proxima.
This situation with soil sinkholes in Turkey poses a threat not only to the agriculture of the region but also to the safety of local residents. Coordination of actions between government organizations and scientific institutions is essential to prevent further destruction and to seek effective solutions for managing water resources.
