Tusk Urges Zelenskyy and Nawrocki to Hold Talks Amid Dispute Over UPA Honor.
Presidents of Ukraine and Poland Urged to Engage in Dialogue
According to Espreso.tv: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on the presidents of Ukraine and Poland to enter into dialogue following a conflict triggered by the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). This move prompted Polish President Andrzej Duda to announce his intention to revoke Ukraine's highest state honor from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
On May 26, the Ukrainian president signed a decree granting the honorary title 'named after the Heroes of the UPA' to the Separate Center for Special Operations 'North' of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In response, on May 29, Polish President Andrzej Duda declared his plan to strip President Zelenskyy of Poland's highest distinction.
Current Situation and Potential Resolutions
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Donald Tusk stated on June 5 that the responsibility for resolving the conflict between Kyiv and Warsaw rests solely with the Ukrainian side.
'Since diplomacy has yielded no results, I am publicly appealing to Presidents Andrzej Duda and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a direct and honest conversation,'Tusk remarked.
Tusk also emphasized that 'this is certainly clear to all of us.' Meanwhile, Marcin Przydacz stressed the need for the Ukrainian president to call Andrzej Duda and apologize for the decision to name a military unit after the Heroes of the UPA.
'If we quarrel over the past, someone else will win the future,'Tusk added.
A meeting of the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle is scheduled for June 8 in Poland, which could serve as a pivotal step in resolving this dispute.
The conflict between Ukraine and Poland over the naming of a Ukrainian military unit underscores the complexity of historical ties between the two nations. Given the importance of cooperation in addressing modern challenges such as security and energy independence, continued dialogue between the leaders may prove crucial in preventing further escalation.
The upcoming session of the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle will provide an opportunity for discussion and, potentially, a compromise that could strengthen Ukraine-Poland relations.
