Russian strike on Christmas Eve: over 150 graves destroyed in Cherkasy cemetery.
Rocket strike in Cherkasy
According to ТСН: At night in Cherkasy, during another Russian rocket attack, missile debris fell on the grounds of the city cemetery. This led to damage to the Alley of Heroes and affected over 150 burials.
According to reports, the explosion of debris also shattered windows and damaged roofs in several educational institutions, dormitories, multi-storey buildings, and municipal enterprises in the city.
People check graves
Local correspondent Olena Matsytska reported that residents of Cherkasy are mass visiting the cemetery. During the attack on Christmas Eve, a large number of graves were destroyed and damaged. People come to find out if their relatives’ graves have been affected.
“The day before, exactly at the moment the first star appeared in the sky, when people gathered in a family circle, Cherkasy was hit by a rocket. Air defense was triggered. The debris and shockwave shattered windows in two educational institutions, in a dormitory, damaged buildings of a garage cooperative. On one section of the cemetery, tombstones and monuments were simply knocked down. The rest are broken, and the crosses are bent. The graves on the Alley of Heroes have also been destroyed. One of the tombstones of a fallen Hero was struck by debris. The city commission is recording which graves have been damaged, compiling lists. They will first restore the burials on the Alley of Heroes,” she said.
She also noted that the Alley of Glory was only affected peripherally: “The main destruction concerned the graves of civilians,” the journalist added.
We remind you that earlier reports were made about the strike on the city cemetery in Cherkasy.
This incident is yet another reminder of the impact of war on the everyday lives of Ukrainians. The damage to graves is not only a material loss but also a profound moral shock for families who lose their connection to the memory of their loved ones. Restoring the burials on the Alley of Heroes and other places should be a priority for the city, as this issue pertains not only to architectural integrity but also to memory and respect for the fallen.
